[IMAGE] July 9. Windows are in.
[IMAGE] July 9. Its picture belongs on a milk carton: The elusive Jacaranda granite. Could it be that this sample is the only piece in existance? Is it a fake? It wouldbe used for the kitchen countertops and backsplashes, if a large enough slab can be located.
[IMAGE] July 14. The rear shapes up now that windows and doors are installed.
[IMAGE] July 14. The front door (laminated wood / fiberglass - something new) has arrived and the porch columns are installed.
[IMAGE] July 14. The view from the front porch looking southwest.
[IMAGE] July 14. "Le Petit Chateau" as seen from the front porch.
July 14. Jayne audits the framing work. "There must be a mistake around here somewhere." (Ha! Sorry, no.)
July 21. I agreed to take down and move this chandelier from the old house to the new foyer. What was I thinking?
July 23. "Something just doesn't look right. This time I'm sure…"
July 23. Uh-oh. She's right. The oval window is supposed to be about a foot lower. It will have to be moved.
July 23. After the oval window incident, there is no stopping Jayne. She relentlessly checks each stud for proper spacing.
July 23. Let's forget the oval window for a minute. Doesn't the cedar siding going up on the rear look good?
August 2. We take a brief break from this and other nonsense by visiting Bermuda. Tray ceilings are the norm here. (Oh, yeah, I'm supposed to relax.)
August 8. The porch is looking great with the railings in place. We're still not certain how to finish the ceiling, railing and deck.
August 8. With the oval windows now dropped down a foot, things look much better.
September 9. Never has so much debate been focused on such a few square feet. The tub platform is revised and revised and… well, in the end it will look like my original drawing.
September 9. PLUMBING! Yes, here's proof (i.e. the black DWV pipes) that the long-absent plumber was here and started work.
September 9. Everybody now understands the concept of the garage-to-basement stairway. The concrete was earlier poured to a too-high elevation. The front face had to be jack-hammered out (foreground). The garage floor will be poured this week.
September 9. The sky above, the mud below. This is going to be a living space in eight weeks?
September 9. Most of the cedar siding is now stained and the railings are primed white.
September 9. Austin pauses to remind us that all these headaches will afterall be worthwhile. A fire by Xmas? We press on…
[IMAGE]
September 12. The garage floor has been poured. The two oil tanks have been delivered. They will probably go into the octagon section in the basement.
September 16. We've settled on the stain for the porch ceiling. It looks good. Here the last of the widow trim is painted "Lancaster White."
September 16. The oak flooring is stacked and ready to be nailed down this week. Here's the family room.
September 16. The temporary stairs used by the framers are now gone so that we can see the whole foyer. This view is from the dining room.
September 16. I like the steel beams in the garage, but this length of DWV pipe in the garage ceiling worries me. We will need extra insulation to avoid winter freezing.
September 16. Jayne gets excited about this, but it's a little harder for me. It's a sample of the foyer tile on top of a sample of the border to give an idea of how it will look installed.
September 16. All of the siding is now stained and the trim is painted. The front exterior needs only steps, latticework under the porch and a stain for the front door.
September 19. Oak flooring being hammered down.
September 19. Another attempt at the master bath platform, but still not like my original drawing. How hard can this be?
September 19. The floor boards are down throughout the second floor.
September 27. Our below-grade sump is sunk into the ground. This will eventually be the lower level bathroom.
September 27. Wild turkeys ate my new grass seed. No kidding. Here they are, caught in the act.
September 27. I GIVE UP!! Attempt #4 at the master bath platform is still not like my original drawing, but at this late date it will have to do.
