Here is the wall end after lots of discussion and rough framing.

Kris and I debated how far to extend this wall end at pilaster "A" for best effect. Shorter would make an easier turn, longer might better balance with the very wide casing. We compromised. The difference was about an inch.

The panel base, in place. Much better than the sheetrock? Perhaps.

To prepare for construction of the panel effects over the fireplace, we first have to tear down the sheetrock. There is some pretty ugly framing timber underneath.

The overhead beam is shown here in the wide-angle context of the family room. Already, it's quite an improvement.

The overhead beam gets covered by it's exterior, finish box.

The canopy for the ceiling fan is 6-1/2 inch in diameter, so we needed to widen the beam over the electrical box to make it look comfortable,

Kris (Kris Constuction, LLC.) seems to be enjoying this.

For the new closet, I avoided the problem of locating another light switch on a crowded wall by choosing a door-jamb-switched light fixture. Here's the rough wiring for the fixture and the jamb switch. The closet light will go on when the door is opened.

The rough-finished beam box. The outer, finished beam box will be added next.

Kris is continuing work on the family room ceiling beam. First comes the rough inner structure. Shown here is an electrical box for the ceiling fan. (It's actually a stand-in for the real, heavier-duty box.)

That's now a much better fit for the gas fireplace insert. I know this is a diversion, but how often do we have zipwalls up on the family room?

This is the offending stone after I made cuts in it with the grinder. Now I just need to chisel off the protruding strips between the cuts. Lots of dust, but it's well contained right now.

There is one protruding stone on the face of the fireplace that prevents the gas insert from fitting flush. It has bothered me for a year and a half. I marked it with blue tape. My grinder is at the ready.

Here is the point at which the new overhead beam box will encounter the LVL's that define the balcony area.

Here, the LVL beam has been covered with a 2x6. Boxing in this beam will soon get much more complicated. I am expecting our electrician here tomorrow and he will use this 2x6 to mount the electrical box.

Overhead, the LVL above the family room has been exposed in preparation for a built-up beam cover and the new ceiling fan.
