The gas supply (yellow flex) is brougt in beneath the fireplace. This view is looking up at the concrete slab base of the fireplace. I used my larger rotary hammer to bore through the slab.

This is the gas shut-off valve that code requires to be accessible from the family room.

The shut-off valve is controlled by a key in the family room floor.

Don't lose that key!

Now we're ready to install the gas insert.

The manufacturer provides a special cap that both exhausts and provides fresh combustion air. Here the fit is checked.

There will be two of these metal flex ducts (i.e. one intake and one exhaust) placed in the old clay fireplace flue.

The insert installers wrestle with the flex ducts.
